Along with redesigning the look and feel of the scriptures site, I also had the immense task of redesigning the search tool.
Working with the PMs and research team, we discovered several pain points. One pain point for the existing site was how the filtering was set up. A search for the word “Faith” rendered every possible instance within all of the content on lds.org. During user testing, we found that the huge list of check boxes was ineffective and did not help users to understand what they were searching for. Users reported feeling overwhelmed by the choices and unsure what results they would get by toggling on/off the various checkboxes.
Another pain point was that once you clicked a result, it would launch you into the scriptures, never to be returned to your search, unless you hit the “Back” button.
Below are my designs for the search function.

In order to address the first pain point, I created a search sentence with filtered keywords that could open into a dropdown like the “Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon” button below the search bar. This brought clarity to the user and helped them know exactly where and what they were searching.

I addressed the second pain point by recreating the drawer.

Once they have found the exact scripture they want, they then have the option to click into that scripture to view all of the notes/ footnotes/ related content they would wish. But, if they still wish, they will have the option to return back to the search results they initially searched for.
